What to Do if You Feel Awkward in Front of the Camera | Albury Wodonga Photographer
If you’ve ever thought, “I’m awkward in photos,” you are absolutely not alone.
As an Albury-Wodonga maternity, newborn, and family photographer, this is one of the most common worries I hear before a session. In fact, most people feel nervous about being in front of the camera, myself included!
The good news is that you do not need to know how to pose, act, or smile perfectly to have beautiful photographs. Most of my clients arrive feeling a little unsure at first (especially dads) and leave saying the session felt much easier than they expected, relaxed, and even a little bit fun (the dads, again!)
Being photographed can feel vulnerable, especially if you are already navigating the physical and emotional changes that come with pregnancy or early motherhood.
If you feel nervous before your maternity photos, newborn session, or family photography session, that is completely okay.
You are not expected to:
Know how to pose
Keep smiling the entire time
Look at the camera perfectly
Have “photogenic” experience
Keep your children perfectly behaved
A professional photography session should not feel stiff or performative. My role as your photographer is to guide you throughout the session so you never feel like you are left figuring it out alone.
One of the biggest ways I help clients feel less awkward in front of the camera is by keeping sessions relaxed and connection-focused. I’ll guide you with simple prompts, movement, and natural interaction.
During your session, I might ask you to:
Walk together
Cuddle your baby
Talk with your partner
Sway gently with your newborn
Play with your children
Focus on each other instead of the camera
What you wear during your photography session can aso make a huge difference in how relaxed you feel.
If you are constantly adjusting clothing or wearing something that does not feel like yourself, it can make it harder to settle into the session naturally.
This is one of the reasons I offer wardrobe guidance and access to my client wardrobe for maternity, newborn, and family sessions. Choosing comfortable, flattering pieces helps clients feel more confident and allows them to focus on enjoying the experience instead of worrying about how they look.
If you are worried about feeling awkward in front of the camera, the best thing you can do is let go of the pressure to perform perfectly. You don’t need to impress anyone, you simply need to show up as yourself.
My job is to create a calm, welcoming environment where you feel supported, guided, and comfortable throughout your session. Over time, the nerves fade, and what is left are genuine moments that feel natural and emotive.
